Sandra Kammann
Theatre Director / Choreographer / Playwriter / Teaching Artist
Sandra Kammann is a Theatre Director, Choreographer, Playwright and Teaching Artist based in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. She has a background in Theatre, Contemporary Dance and Cultural Anthropology. She is Founding Director, Fertile Ground, a 501c3 arts organization dedicated to expanding humanity’s creative potential through artistic exploration and expression. For fifteen years, Sandra directed and performed in her Sisters of One Eye Dance/Theatre Troupe, reweaving lost images of women into humanity’s cultural threads. Her current works explore Eco-Mythology, evoking reclaimed relationships with old-growth forests and wild landscapes.
As a Senior Teaching Artist with The John F. Kennedy Center Education Partnerships Initiative (D.C.), Sandra develops and leads Performing Arts Residencies for diverse pre-K-12 populations in Washington D.C. Public Schools. At Studio Acting Conservatory (D.C.), Sandra is a Senior Faculty member, teaching in the Young Actors Program and Adult Acting Program. Sandra works with The Music In Me Foundation International to build positive student communities and eradicate bullying in Montgomery County (MD) Public Schools.
As an educator, Sandra specializes in Curriculum Development, offering a wide range of Performing Arts Programs spanning multiple genres. These include: Anthropology Express!, Moving Voices Dance Project, The Players Ensemble, Poetry Lab, and Spoken Word Workshop. Leading Fertile Ground (501c3 arts organization), Sandra curates classes, performances and festivals with high caliber training for children and youth, creating a supportive environment for each student to find their unique voice as an artist.
Wearing multiple hats as playwright, director and choreographer, Sandra has presented dozens of works throughout her artistic career. Highlights include: Duir-wyyd: The Dreamer’s Doorway, Women’s Voices Theater Festival (D.C.); Crack Between the Worlds: the goddess returns, Studio Theatre (D.C.), Kammann’s adaptation of Aeschylus’ The Eumenides with lyrics from The Hymns of Orpheus, garnering a Helen Hayes nomination for Outstanding Musical (Deborah Wicks La Puma, Composer/Music Director); Yah-Shen & the Golden Carp, performed on tour and in the Tsunami Asian American Theatre Festival; Living Strong Throughout the Land, a full evening production of theatre, dance and live music presented on tour and for the Women’s Studies Association National Conference in Baltimore, MD.
Sandra’s professional work has also included being a Full Company member with The Beverly Brown Dancensemble (N.Y.C) and Maida Withers Dance Construction Company (D.C.). Sandra has danced the ritual 21 Praises of Tara in Tibetan Buddhist Temples in India & Nepal, including for H.H. The Dalai Lama, and creates Eco-Mythology performances in old growth forests and other wild places.
Sandra’s formal education includes: M.F.A. Dance/Theatre Performance, M. A. Cultural Anthropology: Performance, Myth & Cultural Identity (Honors) from The George Washington University (D.C.), and the three year Professional Acting Program with Studio Acting Conservatory. Sandra is skilled in Mindful Awareness, Nature-based Educational Strategies, Kundalini Yoga, Chi-lel and Dances of Universal Peace, is experienced with chanting & percussion and reads music.
